Lions Share - August 2000
A reproduction of the Lions' monthly newsletter
Editors ColumnWelcome to another edition of the Lions Share. This is a special edition in the fact that it is the first Lions Share to be posted to all the clubs members. The club is concerned that the communication link throughout isn't as strong as it should be. We have over 500 members and it is very difficult to get the information to everyone. Therefore attached you'll find a form which we would appreciate if you could return to the club.
It has been an interesting couple of months. Conference League making the Final of the Statewide Cup and Premier League being one point off the lead in their league. In this edition we have the Club's top two coaches view of their season so far.
Also in this edition news and information on the Final and match arrangements, the Ms Lightwood Park 2000, End of Season functions.

It is looking like Les the Lion will be attending his first game aswell.
For those people who will be attending this game and who haven't been to KGV the club will be making an area ours.

FIVE REASON WHY GOALS ARE SCORED.
1. Lack of pressure on the player with the ball
2. Lack of support for the challenging player
3. Failure to track players down
4. Giving the ball away
5. Set plays
INTERESTING STATISTICS
Consider that the game is played for a total of 90 minutes:
on average the ball will be out of play for 30 minutes
of the 60 minutes the ball is in play each team will have possession of the ball for 30 minutes
each player will have possession of the ball for around 3 minutes
for the remainder of the match a player should be working hard to reduce the effectiveness of the oppossitions attack and increase the effectiveness of his own team's attack.
The 1st half of the year has flown by with mixed results a general feeling that greater achievement isn't too far away. Our league results have left us with just 3 wins from 12 games and fighting to fulfill the goals we set of achieving a final five position. At the same time our Statewide Cup results have been fantastic and will climax with the Grand Final at KGV, 1September. A Scott Pepper special & a Dan Palmer corker lifted the voices of a great, vocal following in a semi-final win against University.
With a fully fit 1st team squad training hard (excluding year ending injuries to Damien Sanita & Warren Iles) I'm sure the 'Borough Conference League will finish the season fighting to make the final series & at the same time prepare ourselves for what will be a great club experience of playing in it's first CUP FINAL at the highest level.
I'm sure we've all experienced the feelings associated with great vocal support. I'd love to think that you will take the opportunity to participate in the atmosphere & join the party at the CUP FINAL on 1 September.

CONFERENCE RESERVES
The 2000 season kicked off in excellent fashion for the Lions (Lotto League side) with a victorious Summer Cup Campaign. The Lions defeated current contenders, Glenorchy Knights (2-0 ), Unviversity (3-1) and Olympic (6-1) in the process. Newcomers to the squad from the previous season Tom Campbell and Grant Bourne gave a good account of themselves over the summer period both displaying a very disciplined and professional approach to their game. During the course of the Cup Michael Easton and Wade Barker were seconded for Conference League duties and Adam Hinkley and Cameron Ellis were recruited to fill the vacancies. Both players performed extremely well and were an integral part of the side's ultimate Cup success. On the downside Adrian Pereira sustained a horrific injury in the campaign, dislocating his knee.
The most pleasing aspect of the Summer Cup was the manner in which the team played. The players were well disciplined both in their behaviour and in the performance of their assigned roles and the results were evident in their style of play. Most matches featured free flowing attacking play that was most entertaining to watch. Unfortunately, for the first couple of games in the roster the momentum from the Cup campaign died off and the side had a couple of dour performances (a loss to South Hobart and a narrow win over Newtown Eagles). This could be partly attributed to the fact that the coach took a couple of weeks off to holiday in Asia (tsk tsk).
In the weeks that followed the form from the Summer Cup returned although it was somewhat sporadic; playing well in patches whilst at other times doing little more than containing the opposition. Stalwarts like Frank Boonstra, Mark Hughes and Ross Hinkley produced some inspirational performances which helped the side get back into top gear. Adam "Bear" Coleman was in good form and defensively the side was setting the standard for the rest of the league. Andrew Kerr was recruited from Premier League as the senior squad experienced injuries and drew on Lotto League players. Andrew had a sensational debut for the side and has given polished performances each week since his inclusion. Injuries took a heavy toll about a third of the way into the season and in one week there were 9 players absent from the Conference and Lotto League teams. Lotto League players were called up to fill vacancies in the Conference League side and to compound matters, on one occasion all of the top 4 senior sides at Kingborough were playing on the same day. With manpower stretched to the limit the Lotto League managed to scrape a victory over the Zebras (2-1) although the margin should have been greater. At about the half way mark the side suffered it's worst setback conceding 5 goals to Glenorchy Knights who are now the team's main opposition for the title. The Lions turned in an unusually poor defensive performance giving Knight's attackers far too much room and ultimately discipline was lost compounding matters even further. The only good point from the game was Daniel Palmer's hat-trick, in his first full appearance since the cup (due to injury), which gave the scoreline an ounce of respectability (5-3).
From that point on the side has taken maximum points on every outing and as of last week is currently holding top spot in the placings. The flair is returning and the side is starting to put it together for extended periods each week. This has not been easy as the roster is riddled with interruptions with byes and weeks off for Conference League Statewide Cup fixtures. The final five games are set to be riveting in the count down to the end of the season with tough encounters expected against University, Olympic and Glenorchy Knights. If the Lions can perform at their best for the remaining five matches the results should definitely be favourable.
I would like to thank all players who have assisted by sitting on the substitute's bench, when asked, this season (particularly PJ Bester, Neil Wilkinson, Adam Hinkley and Grant Bourne). In some cases the players concerned have had to front up to two fixtures on a weekend (Saturday and Sunday) or alternatively have sacrificed a game in their own team to bolster the ranks of the Lotto League side. Your help has been instrumental in the success of the side. A big vote of thanks must also go to the support crew Roy (Manager), Melinda (1st Aid), Bernie (Trainer), Kath Barker (who does a marvellous job cleaning the strip each week), and Ken Watson (who helps out with 1st Aid and as Trainer whenever needed).

WOMENS REPORT
The Kingborough Lions womens team have recently completed a tremendous four game winning streak which has included a draw with Nelson, a win against the top team University and solid wins against Metro and then Clarence . Those performances have been the result of consistent strong training attendenances and a growing team spirit.
Goals have come from the boots of Lisa Perry, Terri Norris, Amy Van der Veer and Adeen Curran. Whilst at the other end Dom Koppen, Mel Cowen, Elle harper and goalkeeper Kristy Kelly have developed into a disclipined unit proving impassable to any oppositions strikers. Congratulations to Andrea Turbett and Amy, who recently competed at the U17 National Championships and both have returned in fantastic form, obvisously benefitting from the experience.
The team hope to continue this form through to the end of the season and then to build on it for next season when they'll challenge for the title.
The women will also be playing as a curtain raiser to the Statewide Cup Final - get out there and support the best womens team in the state !
