Angus Whyte High School Challenge Shield
NEW KINGBOROUGH HIGH SCHOOL COMPETITION COMMENCES THIS WEEK
This coming Wednesday will see the launch of a new and exciting midweek competition between the four High Schools in the Kingborough Municipality.
Grade 9 & 10 students from Kingston, Taroona, Calvin & Woodbridge High Schools will compete for the Angus Whyte High School Challenge Shield, a trophy named in the honour of one of Kingborough Lions former life members, Angus Whyte. The concept is the brainchild of Kingborough's Football Development Manager, Brad Hughes and is based loosely on the Bill Turner Cup competition which is the largest high school tournament in NSW. This is the first competition of its kind in Tasmania where private & public schools will compete on an equal basis.
The greatest emphasis for this tournament will be on sportsmanship, fun, music and entertainment. We are hoping the High Schools see fit to bring their school bands, recorded music, horns, drums, rattles, etc. to create an atmosphere consisting of noise, colour and fun. School colours, banners etc. will all be more than welcome. Students from each of the competing schools will also be offered the opportunity of providing their own pre match and half time entertainment. This offers a broad scope to the imagination and is only limited by the time allowed before and between matches.
Although this is the first year of competition plans are already being made for up coming years. Final plans for subsequent years have yet to be made but ideas include creating on open high school competition for all southern based high schools, introducing a junior (grade 7 & 8) level and also an open girls competition. If the latter were to be adopted the winning school would be based on aggregate scores for all matches.
The opportunities are there for the high schools to create a school tournament that they could call their own.
The first match this coming Wednesday (29th June) will be between the two pre tournament favourites, Kingston High & Taroona High. Both schools have very strong teams which include a sprinkling of lads that play in many of the senior men's club competition in Southern Tasmania. This match should be something well worth finishing work that little bit earlier for.
The entire tournament will see its climax on Wednesday 31st August when all four teams will be on show for 'Finals Day'. The day will commence at 1.30pm with the play off for 3rd & 4th in the Consolation Final. This will be followed by the 'big one' 1st v 2nd for the Angus Whyte High School Challenge Shield.
