2006 pre-season activities
KLUSC 20/20 Cricket 2006
January 22nd brought around KLUSC’s first ever 20/20 game.
To say the weather was hot would be an understatement and credit goes to the boys who showed up, as with a forecast of 37 degrees I’m sure there were a lot of other places we all could have been. But those are tests that preseason presents us. On that note we started with a run!! A few parameters to work within but all had to attack ‘Heartbreak Hill’ and for between 20 to 30 minutes. We all set off at our own paces, some faster than others, with Rossco de Castella leading the way, and recruit Rob Martello and Coach Iles lasting the longest. All survived, with the unanimous view that it was harder than it looked.
After a recovery dip in the Derwent the cricket began. Captains Clydesdale and Hinkley selected teams based loosely on knowledge of cricketing backgrounds – how foolish this was to be!! Clydesdale won the toss and chose to bat – quite literally. The innings started badly with Coach Dale struck a ‘box crunching’ blow by Bear Coleman, who followed with another rising delivery and a top edge to Brett Andrews who foolishly took the catch (extinguishing any chance he has of playing senior soccer!!!) dismissing Dale for a mere 4. Clydesdale then went about smashing Coleman to all parts, the highlight a six, which surprised nobody more than Clydesdale himself. Martello, who certainly looked the part, was holding up the other end and Clydesdale’s dismissal for 17 to a great IC catch on the boundary chasing another six brought Marc Iseli to the crease. These two went about putting together a crucial partnership, Martello working the ball around and Iseli demonstrating some clean striking of the ball. Iseli was finally dismissed for 9, bringing Charlie White to the crease. Unfortunately White’s innings was short lived departing for a duck and Team Clydesdale appeared to be struggling. Enter Marchello Marchiolli. Upon taking guard well outside leg, the fielding team could have been forgiven for thinking the Marchiolli may not be bothering the scorer for too long, how wrong would they be. He set about picking up the scoring rate, smashing Coach Iles in to a neighbouring backyard ( the ball is yet to be retrieved – big dog!!). Martello continued to rotate the strike finally succumbing for a well constructed 17 and the nickname of ‘Ricky’ Martello. Last batsman to the crease was Ian ‘IC’ Cannon. IC and Chell steered Team Clydesdale to a score of 124 off it’s 21 overs, IC making 10 (containing a big six over mid wicket – nothing IC does surprises us) and Chell finishing on 45 not out, containing three fours’s and two sixes’s. Best of the bowlers was probably Bear Coleman who recovered from his initial hammering to swing the ball prodigiously and worry all batsmen. A good score but not as many as we would have liked.
After a short drinks break, Team Hinkley began their innings. Hinkley chose to send in the experienced AJ Pereira and Brad Nelson. Pereira was the first to go, gloving one to the keeper off Iseli. Geoff Freeman strode to the crease the first of a much vaunted middle order. He looked in good touch before top edging one high off Martello and Iseli moving to his left to make a difficult catch look regulation. Rossco Hinkley was next in, possibly shuffling the order in an effort to stabilise the innings. At the other end Nelson was having no problems with the attack moving along nicely and he was to witness another dismissal at the other end. Clydesdale turned to his strike bowler Dale who did the job for his captain, inducing an edge from Hinkley, which was well taken by keeper White. With the wheels falling off around him Nelson was next to go for 14 ( two fours) and his disappointment was evident, throwing his bat towards the pavilion ( and his gloves!!). If some of his fellow batsmen had shown similar value on their wicket the result may well have been different!!! The next three wickets fell in quick succession, Iles was caught trying to heave away to leg for 4, Bretto Andrews fell for a duck (serves him right) and Bear Coleman only just managed to trouble the scorers with 1.
All out for 45 and a commanding 79 run victory and bragging rights to Team Clydesdale. Marchello Marchiolli was named Man of the Match for a swashbuckling 45 not out, just pipping Marc Iseli who put in a solid all round performance.
Good day had by all. Hopefully we will get more numbers next year. Note, for all prospective players that all current cricketers failed. Thanks to the Blackmans Bay Cricket Club for use of gear, opening up the clubrooms and putting on a BBQ at the end of the game.

KLUSC Triathalon 2006
The second ‘event’ of KLUSC preseason was held at Blackmans Bay beach. Players were divided into teams of 4 or 5, and required to each complete the 4 legs of the event – run, bike, surfboard, paddle and kayak. These were to be completed on a rotation basis, allowing for breaks between legs.
Spectators arrived hoping to see the likes of Marchello Marchiolli in the kayak and Ziad on the surfboard. They weren’t disappointed but this time Marchiolli, with more experience, shone in the kayak and it was Chris Sinita who sank. And he did sink, three times no less, having to complete the second lap of the course pulling the water-laden vessel behind him. Brett Andrews also had trouble in the kayak, at one stage heading off to Oppossum Bay!! There was much conjecture as to the most difficult leg, with the board paddle still providing aching shoulders and the bike a shock to quads that hadn’t ridden for years.
Eventually the winning team was that which included Stuart Betts, Stuart Morse, Warren Iles and Pete While. They took home all the prizes, winning comfortably in the end, even with the burden of one less team member.

KLUSC Orienteering 2006
Event three, the KLUSC enduro/orienteering challenge, held at Waterloo.
The boys did not know what they were getting themselves in for with this one. An early set up for the coaches, the boys arrived, a bit fearful of the steep terrain they were entering. After a briefing in which all the rules were explained, players moved into teams of two and began studying their first map. The task – 9 stations, 9 maps, having to return to base in order to see the next map. Off they went, some high into the hills and some far out of sight.
There was early controversy as a group, which will not be named, picked up a station and carried it with them instead of simply marking their card – made it tough for the other groups. There was also another group who felt that the stations needed to be hid a little better!!!
This event was hard work and all players stuck to the task superbly. First team finished was that of Hinkley and Martello (1hr 10mins), with Iseli and Andrews second (1hr 25mins), although they had received time penalties for indiscretions. Special mention goes to the team of Stuart Betts and Chris Giomataris, with Chris obviously finding it a tough task but never once shirking the issue or asking to stop – a player of the future for the club.
It was great to have this event supported, and it was a good day. This was an opportunity for individuals to test themselves physically and mentally, and in a situation that was quite challenging. Certainly more was gained from this than sending players out on a road run and those players involved will benefit from their involvement.
Look forward to Orienteering 2007 – compulsory!!! A quick thank you to our hosts, Mark and Cathy Norris who gave us free reign of their land, and to the two partners who did the BBQ, when I’m sure there was a lot of other things they could have been doing. It takes a bit of effort to do something different, so both Warren and I appreciate the support we get.
