How to Finance a Soccer Team

As we have observed in earlier blog posts, it costs quite a bit of money to run a soccer team. Kits have to be bought for the players. The players have to be paid. Even if they are not professional players, they still (usually) have to be given small stipends: otherwise they lose motivation. The coaches and other members of the technical bench too have to be paid. Again, even if they are ‘volunteers’ they still (usually) have to be given small allowances, to cater for their transport and other such expenses. Further still, the grounds on which the soccer team plays often have to be paid for. And at yet another level, there are traveling costs to be catered for: whenever the team has a match out of town. The question that comes up, at this point, is as to how the money to cater for such expenses can be generated.

One way to finance a soccer team (which we have dealt with at great length in a previous post), is by getting a corporate sponsor. The corporate sponsor gives the team the money it needs to finance its activities — in exchange for publicity. It is a win-win deal.

Another way to finance a soccer team is by enlisting the fans of the team to be ‘members’. This way, the team is converted into a ‘club’, and the people then pay membership fees. The money generated that way is subsequently used to finance the team’s activities.

Yet another way to finance a soccer team is by undertaking fundraising campaigns. You can have a traditional fundraising campaign: where you hire a venue, and invite people to donate funds to finance the team’s activities. Or you can have an online fundraising campaign. You can, for instance, create a PayPal account — to which people can donate funds to finance the team’s activities. Don’t underestimate the power of online fundraising, especially in this day and age, when majority of the people get their paychecks online. A person who is conversant with the team’s fundraising activities may, for instance, go to securitasepay.com (that is, to the Securitas Epay portal), to get his paycheck. And upon finding a bonus in his paycheck, he may decide to donate the extra funds to the team, through its PayPal account. This way, the team is able to raise the funds it needs to finance its activities. You therefore shouldn’t underestimate the power of online fundraising.
