Under 9 Girls Gold Match Report
Saturday, July 12, 2008 v Waimea Heights (Under 8) @ Waimea Heights
Match report :
A drive into town on a chilly Saturday morn, the snow gleaming on the Mountain and the sun doing its best to warm up the day. The game was against an under 8 Waimea Heights side which had entered the competition this term following some startling results in the earlier term.
Lots were drawn for the much sought-after goalkeeper position, with Josie being the lucky winner for the first half. Josie did very well, making several excellent saves and sending some good kicks down field.
On the outfield, a sick Ruby, absent Gwendolyn and (temporarily) lost Grace meant we had only one reserve, resulting in quick-fire substitutions, players going back on after only a couple of minutes break.
The play was very attacking at both ends. After a slower start, our girls started to show some composure on the ball and move forward with gusto. Lily and Annie were making many fine moves, whilst Charlotte had defenders mesmerised with her dribbling. Ariane and Isabelle tended toward defence, and did an excellent job in stopping the Waimea attacks and moving the ball to their team-mates.
Ashleigh made many fine runs from the middle, whilst Laura put her usual big effort into tackling and dribbling towards goal. Grace joined the game and showed good control in dribbling the ball, and making some good attacking play.
The second half saw Annie slip on the goal-keeper's gloves, and she made several good saves and big boots down field. Josie moved into the outfield for this half and helped the team start to dominate play, resulting in some good attacking soccer.
The spectators were treated to some wonderful displays of dribbling, shooting and control of the ball, so well done to all of the players.
Also, well down to the Waimea team, which never gave up and displayed good technique and control of the ball.
Finally, we all hope that Ruby feels better soon.
