Under 9 Girls Gold Match Report
Saturday, July 19, 2008 v Eastern Region - B @ Edgeworth St
Match report :
We all packed lunches and passports for a trip across the River for an afternoon game against Dodges Ferry, a newcomer to the Girls' competition. The parents at least were thankful for a warmer viewing climate, a bit different to the usual 9 o'clock start.
Goal keepers were again selected by celebrity ballot, with Charlotte and Grace being the lucky winners. Charlotte took her turn in the first half, making some good saves and also finding that a quick release of the ball via a throw is just as effective as a big boot downfield. In the second half, Grace showed some real talent, preventing several good shots from 'the Ferry' from making it to the goals.
In the outfield, all of the girls showed marked improvement, demonstrating some good control and starting to apply basic principles of good soccer. I think everyone has improved, and, judging by the "Ooohs" and "Ahhhs" emanating from the sideline, the play is growing as a spectacle!
Some of the highlights were: Charlotte's stubborn defense (and unruly laces); Josie's dribbling (and safe ear-rings); Ariane's runs (and big 'Knee-er'); Ashleigh's big tackles (and smiling as she did so); Isabelle's reading of the play in defence (and hair control); Annie's attacking play (and massive throw-ins); Lily's dribbling (and thunderous shots); Laura's attacking play (and never-say-die attitude); Ruby's controlled passing (and return from sick-leave); and Grace's attacking runs (and fearless goal-keeping). Phew!
Same time, same place for next week. Coach is playing at the same time, so an able assistant shall be required.
