Match report :
Saturday 12.30 saw the kickoff at "Fortress Pontville" and a game that ended up being a closely fought contest.
The combination of youth and experience had the opposition at a loss to know what to do in the early stage of the game. Attacking uphill and against the wind, Aon in his legendary No.59 shirt and gold boots, assisted by Captain Bob Daley, slotted the first goal of the game into the net on 11 minutes.
Trying a new formation the Lions were dominating the play and not giving the opposition time on the ball, but a lapse in concentration shortly after the goal saw an equaliser in the first half.
The game, still dominated by the Lions, saw the teams second goal scored by Bob Daley. A second goal by Hobart United kept the score at 2-2 until 4 mins from the end of the game when a well taken goal by Hobart United made a 3-2 score line. The game ended with that score line despite the Hobart United goal being placed under enormous pressure including a Bob Daley shot from 40 yards.
The whole team worked well with some outstanding performances. Tony Daley, as usual did not stop running in central defence. Excellent intelligent football, also in defence from Ian Sypkes and Felix Fitzgerald.
Great close ball skills from striker Benfes Taban were a pleasure to watch and show promise of goals in the games to come. Also Matthew Davidson playing in midfield made some amazing runs from midfield and on a number of occasions dribbled past 3-4 players on his way to the penalty area, another player to watch in future games.
Solid performances from Mike Walton, Isaac Freeman and Drew Baker also contributed to a great team effort.
Big thanks to Matt Lyle for playing in goal... and enjoying it! Matt's talking to the defence was invaluable.
Looking forward to the next game against Huon Valley.
Grant Tolond - Coach.
