Match report :
Epic would be one word to describe the game this week which was really a must win for us. We'd beat metro already at lightwood park this year in the Statewide Cup and had to get a win in order to start our climb up the table in the league.
The line up was, Bear in goals, Chel and Rosco at fullback, Browny and Marco at centre back, Gazza, Palmer and Bretto in the middle. Bevo was playing as a wide attacking midfielder and Greg and Tmac were playing up front.
The game started similar to last week which wasn't good for us because we had conceded two early goals again putting ourselves in a tough position.
Metro won a penalty after just 12 minutes after the ball was given away in the middle and a long ball forward allowed Dawes to run at our centre backs. Just inside the box Browny was nut-megged bringing down Dawes at the same time. He took the penalty sending Bear the wrong way to make it Kingborough 0 Metro 1.
Only two minutes later chel was looking to clear out of defence and the ball bounced up and hit his hand resulting in a free kick to Metro from a metre outside the box. Hopes touched the ball to Terry Kent who drove the ball into the top right hand corner and left the bear with no chance. Kingborough 0 Metro 2.
Metro were on the attack and Bretto stood his ground when his man tried to play a one-two around him. He ran into Bretto who just stood his ground. A free-kick was given for the challenge right outside Metro's bench. Their coach got up and hurled abuse at Bretto for probably the nicest thing you'll ever see him do. After abusing Bretto he started abusing Geoff then tried to kick a ball at him which ended up going no where near him and everyone waited as he was sent from the ground.
The best chance in the first half for us fell to Greg after Ross's cross deep from the right. Greg slid in but his shot was saved brilliantly by McKenna who gave away a corner.
Metro almost had a third goal midway through the second half after Dawes raced onto a through ball and beat bear to it but Browny kept running back towards the goal and managed to clear off the line.
Gazza got the ball in the middle of the park and looked to pass wide both sides but ended up doing a few circles around his defender before finding room to shoot. His shot curled towards the far post bouncing in front of McKenna who did well to save again.
We couldn't have asked for a better start to the second half!!
We had the kick-off and before Metro touched the ball it was in the back of the net. We worked the ball wide on the right and Ross put a cross in behind the defence and Greg pounced on it with a diving header which sailed into the right hand corner flicking the post as it went in.
We were back in it!!
Kingborough 1 Metro 2.
Ross got the ball at right back and cut inside, no one seemed to challenge him. Palmer was left unmarked down the left and he cut in towards the box and got on the end of Ross's through ball to beat the advancing McKenna and see the ball dribble into the right hand corner.
A mere 4 minutes later a long drive from a metro player beat bear who couldn't get a strong enough hand on it to tip it over the bar.
Kingborough 2 Metro 3.
Then only 3 minutes after that Brett finally won a penalty after a throw in. He had been held all first half from long throws and he was finally rewarded after turning his marker and being clipped as he turned. Bretto was off penalties before the game and Chel was meant to take it but Bretto lurked with eyes wide open on the penalty spot waiting for chel to see him. Bretto ended up with it and sent the keeper the wrong way.
Kingborough 3 Metro 3.
And just 2 minutes later chel slid in from behind on a Metro player giving away a free kickin a dangerous position. Terry Kent, this time on the right foot, bent it up and over the wall to give them the lead.
Kingborough 3 Metro 4.
The next attack we had earned ourselves a corner. From the corner McKenna claimed to be push out as the ball fell to Gazza who was unmarked no less than ONE metre from the goal. He was so surprised that the ball just hit his thigh and it ended up going over the bar to the amazement of many.
James Correy came on for his senior debut and had one long range drive go just wide of the far post but then we kept pressing and he picked up the ball in almost exactly the sameposition. He drove it along the ground through a crowd of players and it looked like it was going harmlessly through to McKenna. Greg came out of no where, amazingly with no one around him, and diverted the ball in the right hand corner.
Kingborough 4 Metro 4.
The spirit out on the ground was fantastic and no one out there wanted to lose the game or even draw it. Both teams kept pressing right to the end. A Metro defender cleared the ball and it bounced out and looked to go over the fence.
Chel ran and jumped up on the fence to drag the ball back and that summed up how much we wanted the win and in the end we got it!(91 minutes into the game) The throw in got cleared towards the middle of the park, about 30 yards out from goal. Palmer contested for the ball and it fell to chel who controlled before slipping a little through ball between two metro defenders meant for Tmac but Greg beat him to the ball to poke it over the advancing McKenna to complete his hatrick and seal a win for us before everyone ran and jumped on him!
A hard earned win for us and we did it by not only creating chances through being a bit more creative but also finishing those chances.
We kept possession well and played the ball around well. A few defensive errors that we can work on at training to get ready for the Knights game at KGV this Friday night. The highlight this week was that we scored 5 goals in a half and we hadn't managed to score 5 goals in our last 5 league games added together.
Hopefully now we've turned the corner and can continue to win games.
