Match report :
It was the second Qualification Round of the Statewide Lakoseljac Cup and it was a perfect day for it and the wonderful music coming from the clubrooms from a CD made over 10 years ago got us all in the mood. Metro were the opponents for us and we'd been struggling to score before this game unlike Metro who had been scored easily but also conceding a fair few. We tried a new variation in their formation and it worked effectively in the first half and should have in the second if we had a little more composure on the ball.
The line up was, Bear in goals, chel and rosco at fullback, Charlie and marco at centre back, goodsey, palmer and Bretto in the middle. Bevo was playing as a wide attacking midfielder and Greg and bremner were playing up front.
The first half started well with us playing the ball around well. We were working brilliantly down the right hand side with Bevo and rosco combining well and getting lots of dangerous crosses into the box that metro found hard to deal with.
The first real chance fell to Greg and he looked certain to score. He was put clean through and found himself well inside the box, McKenna shut him down and Greg side-footed the ball over the bar.
Metro un-expectedly scored the opener after a long goal kick which bounced and ended up with marco facing his own goal. Guma poked the ball away from him and Dawes ran onto it. Chel tried to clear but must have toed the ball into the middle of Dawes'boot and it sailed over the bear and into the back on the net. Kingborough 0 Metro 1.
We won many corners in the first half and Bevo was putting in some great balls for the runners to get on the end of. After a few corners one finally ended up in the back of the net..somehow. The ball came in and it was a scramble. Charlie missed kicked it and it popped up, goodsey headed it back into the mixer, the ball somehow found its way into the path of Brett 'the DugOnG'Andrews, who out paced the metro defence and found his reserves goal scoring form from many years ago at the same time, to poke the ball into the back of the net. Kingborough 1 Metro 1.
Bretto was dominating in the air, although some of the metro players thought otherwise. The only time they got their head on the ball was when the dog won the header and the ball rebounded into the back of the Metro's player head which they knew nothing about.
Rosco and Bevo were getting in some great positions for crosses and Greg was often lurking free at the back post. His time came when the ball came in from the right and he kept his header down but it went agonisingly close. Geoff was up on the sideline thinking it was a goal but it was unfortunately the side netting.
Metro mustn't have seen our game last week because they failed to mark Charlie off corners on a few occasions. His late entrance to the box went un-noticed and Bevo found him with the perfect ball. McKenna made a brilliant save and kept metro in it.
Playing the ball around from the back payed off when Charlie looked in trouble at the back but managed to out muscle his opponent and find chel at left back who played a one-two with goodsey before dribbling into the opposing half and played a ball into Bevo's feet at the top of the box. He touched the ball around a defender or two then placed the ball with ease into the top right hand corner from just outside the box to score his first senior goal. (Scoring off a corner in the summer cup doesn't count haha) Kingborough 2 metro 1.
Some metro players didn't seem like they wanted to be there and enjoyed hanging 10 to 20 offside on many occasions. Goodsey was carded after a tackle and then Kent's drive went wide for a goal kick. Charlie was then caught by a foot dangerously close the groin region and maybe have said something along the line of 'you dirty prick'which earned himself a yellow card while the Metro player got away with nothing.
Chel was trying to get his nutmeg stat back into positive territory from last week when he was nut-megged about 5 times in a row. Unfortunately he is still in negative territory. L
Late in the half the ball came into the box, Greg toe poked it to chel who found himself open in the box on a bit of an angle. The shooting angle got shut down so he slipped the ball square across the box and Bevo got in front of his opponent and looked certain to score but McKenna produced another fine save to keep metro in the game. Kingborough 2 Metro 1 at half time.
The second half started with rosco knocking the ball out after he quickly summed up the Greg was injured even before Greg had the chance to get up. Yes, it looked ridiculous as Greg got up and looked very able straight after rosco kicked it out.
In the second half we started knocking longer balls instead of trying to play the way we did in the first half which is how we created so many chances So the second half wasn't as action packed as the first.
One metro player on the bench was smart enough to let the ball run through his legs and let the Kingborough players get it when they were already 2-1 down before realising that it was their time they were wasting.
Metro cleared the ball quickly and it was flicked onto Guma. He cut in towards the box and crossed the ball into Marco's hand and the result was a penalty to Metro. Kent sent 'the bear'right and put the ball to the left to make it Kingborough 2 Metro 2.
Guma then was warned for kicking the ball away after being called offside again and again…. And again. Then he decided to do it again after being called offside again and he got away with it because he drove the ball into bear and the ball rolled back to where the offside was.
The match was continually physically and was a good contest to be apart of. The Kingborough bench had to be talked to and I don't think Geoff was too happy haha.
Palmer was substituted and Ewol came on with about 15 - 20 minutes to go. It was then ewol who picked up the ball in the middle of the park and turned and ran at the defence before slipping a little pass through Bevo who took a touch across the top of the box before curling a 20 metre shot over and away from McKenna to make it Kingborough 3 Metro 2.
Chel was then yellow carded after all his points for bad things he'd done were added up by the referee after he obstructed an opponent near the half way line. It was a yellow card but anyway we're glad to see the AFL's point system at the Tribunal has come into the game down here now. In the second half there were two penalty claims both for hand ball and one at each end. Both were waved away by the referee.
ewol found himself with lots of space but was on his left hand side and could of had another touch and driven a shot, which he is good at, but instead he tried to place it and it went well over the bar.
Brett went in for another big challenge and found the ball on this occasion unlike last week against the eagles but came off second best and received a big cheer from the metro bench who must have been sick of his 'Drogba like'physical presence that had been on show all day. The 'Junkyard DugOnG'was off to hospital the next day to get the foot checked but it doesn't look broken but is happy to have the week off work!
Bretto was standing at the half way line waiting to be substituted since he couldn't move but was sent back in the box to defend a corner by Freeman.
The match ended Kingborough 3 Metro 2. It was good to finally score some goals and hopefully we can keep finishing the chances we have been creating. Thanks to Metro, they are a team who never give up and was good to see them all in the clubrooms enjoying some food and drink after the game with all the Kingborough boys.
