Match report :

A bright and beautiful day at Olinda Grove saw the Lionesses take on Taroona in the Summer Cup semi-final.

Taroona looked dangerous on paper, having scored 7 goals in their run to the finals.

Our line-up looked good, with the exception of Madi missing due to work commiments, and on a late whim of the coach, lined up 4-3-3, with the youthful trio of Robyn, Sarah and Camilla up front.

Our bench resembled a family outing, with picnic blankets, grandparents, expecting mothers, players of the future...

From the start, it was an exciting and open game, as Taroona found holes in our defence (usually plugged by a last minute slide tackle), and our front three terrorised their backline.

One effect of the three up front was the space it gave Terri and Eleanor to work behind them, and it was no surprise when Terri, given time to shoot, popped one in the top corner to open the scoring.

Shortly after this, a goal bound shot from the left was bundled into the net by Camilla.

This was quickly followed by a goal that was missed by this correspondent, but witnesses assure me that Sarah dribbled around six players before calmly finishing (one of the witnesses was Sarah).

After this, the toll of having only three midfielders began to tell, and we got stretched out and lost coherence in our play, with Monika called upon to clean up at the back several times.

The second half, as per the prematch plan, saw us switch to 4-4-2, and we created far fewer chances, although there were still some good ones.

Next week, the final, with a rematch against Metro (3-2 last time!) - this time we will have Sarah and Terri, they will have Karen Lawler.  Should be a good game.
