Season's report

Pre Season - Social Cup 2001 - After a vigorous pre-season training of two nights, Gavin Plunkett, Bob Stewert and I, figured we were ready to play in the pre season cups. As Greg and Mick had over looked us we said bugger them, lets get our own team together. We made a few phone calls and got a few of Micks rejects. We started OK, won our first game against another bunch of misfits, then we even won a second game and a third! Then we thought "shit" it's time to get serious and work harder at training. We won our group. Scored seventeen goals and conceded two. In the semi-final the Lions beat the Christians 2-0. "Holy Shit", we were in the final, which we went on to win 2-0 against White Eagles, "Let the beers flow". Thanks to all the guys in the squad from the younger ones like Steve, Mark, Alex, Andrew and Luke, to the not so younger ones like, Bob, Brian, Gavin and Trev, and to the rest like, George,Ben, Daniel, Dave, Cam and Foxie. A special thanks to our manager Roy.
Well done guys a great way to start the season, "Champions".

The Season - I am struggling to find a way which adequately describes our season, we didn't finish last, we didn't come 4th or 5th, we didn't win the premiership. NO we finished 2nd by 1 point, that's what is hard to take. How true it is, so near and yet so far. We played 21 games, won 16, drew 3, lost 2, had 73 F & 20 A. In any language they were very good results. In round 1 we won 4, drew 1 and lost 1. Round 2, won 6, drew 1 and in the final round , won 6 drew 1, lost 1. The game that cost us the trophy was the first round loss to Uni, with Bear out injured from an U23 game and the relaxed attitude of the players before the game, we went down 2-1. This kept Christian UTD in the hunt, and they went on to win the comp.
We had a lot of good performances throughout the year, Adam (Bear) Coleman was unsteady early but settled to have one of his finest seasons to date. Sweeper (Grey) Bob was as steady as a rock, and his pin point passing out of defence was a great asset to the team. Young Bob (Sober) Daley settled at right full back, and made the position his. Wilkie as ever was Mr Reliable, left full back Cam (I want to be a striker) Ellis, was very good when he stayed at full back. Ben and Dave the wide midfielders did a power of work up and back. After Leno retired Brent put his hand up in the middle of the park and did hard yards for the team, helped by P.J (did you see that tackle) and later in the season Tim Dale had a major influence on the teams performance, finishing as our leading goal scorer. Up front (Dynamo Damo) enjoyed a good season returning from a broken leg. We didn't have regular strikers after Xmas went up to the Reserves, Rodsie gave it his best shot at all times as did Nathan and Lazy Luke.

Thanks to all the guys who helped us out Wade,Ross, Adam, George, Tony, Jeff and others. A special thanks to our manager Roy, and also to the coaches Mick and Gavin for their help throughout the season. That's it folks its been a very good season, we were in it right to the end, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Thankyou

Coach Vince Grimes
