Season's report

It's testimony to the strength and depth of the Club that the senior men's fourth team contained so many talented players. With such talent we started the season very impressively with George and Nathan both on a scoring spree and with the team looking like realistic contenders.

Clarence, Metro and Nelson emerged as the early front-runners. We dispensed with Nelson at Sherburd relatively easily, were caught out by being four : nil down to Clarence but fought back to four : three, and lost four : three to Metro after leading for 85 minutes. Nevertheless at the end of the first of three rounds we were still within reach of the leaders.

The turning point of the season was our second game against Clarence. It was good to see everyone get focussed for this game. Unfortunately, despite leading until late in the game, we succumbed to pressure and lost three : two. Soon after we were shocked by an unexpected home loss to Cannons.

I think these results took the sting out of our tail and while we saw out the season in good spirit, playing well and showing plenty of fight against the stronger teams, there wasn't quite the same intensity.

Nevertheless, the team spirit prevailed. There were those who attended every training session, there was never any acrimony within the team and we always played fairly and in good spirit. It was a pleasure to play with such a great bunch of guys and with a team that was always looking to play good soccer. It's a pity that because of the revised league structure, we didn't get to play at the same venue as the Division 1 team very often.

So in summary a season which was enjoyable but where we didn't quite realise our potential. There's lots of promise for the Club with talented youngsters like the While "twins", Steve Morgan, Nathan and Simmo. The regulars Tony Daley, Errol, George and Geoff Smith also showed they still have what it takes.

Congratulations to George and Nathan for their goal-scoring prowess and to Geoff Smith for two memorable world class penalty saves.

Finally thanks to all those who make life easier by being part of a large club. We received help at various time from the under 18s, under 23s, Division III, Division I and Premiere reserves. Thanks to you all. Thanks to Vince the Division I coach for taking all the training sessions and not plundering our team when Division 1 was short. Thanks to Brian and Jill and all the committee members for their behind the scenes work and support. See you all next time round.

Gavin.
