Season's report

Third time lucky! After two years of being runners up the Premier Reserves finally climbed the mountain and became Premiers of the D.J. Motors League and so becoming the first senior premiership winners for the Kingborough Lions United Soccer Club.

The season commenced way back in November 2000 with pre-season training at the excellent Ham Common and the squads eventually selected for the pre-season summer cup competition. Unfortunately we were unsuccessful in our bid for this trophy, going out in the semis in a penalty shoot out. However we were after a bigger jewel in the crown. Our exit from the summer cup saw a large change in personnel for the start of the league campaign and I would like to thank all the players who, through players dropping back from the senior squad, were required to drop down to division one. The squad was selected and we decided to set ourselves some targets namely:
1. Winning all our Home games
2. Having the best defensive record
3. Have the best goals for record
4. Being in the top four for the season.

In my mind I knew if we got anywhere near these goals we were going to go pretty close. To the credit of the players we achieved the following:
1. Lost one game at home - the last one when the premiership had been won
2. We achieved this aim
3. We missed out on one goal to achieve this target
4. I don't think we were out of the top two all year.

To the players who formed our squad I would say thank you. It was a pleasure to coach such a close knit group of guys who always managed to rise to the occasion when needed and supported each other when things got tough.
  • Ian Trotter: First year in goals did exceptionally well and this was reflected in the confidence our defence had in him.
  • David Kolabinski: Mr Dependable never puts in a bad game and loves the man marking role.
  • Brian Reynolds: Coaxed out of retirement to play a leading role in guiding this young team, put the starch in the defence.
  • Adam Hinkley: Goodsey what can you say a fine young player with ability to burn. Just like his beloved Swans
  • Ben Daley: Enjoyed the stability of playing in one team all year, runs all day, thrives on work.
  • Jonathan Greenwood: another player with a big heart, and long legs, ran a marathon each game.
  • Wade Barker;: A great season from another young player, hates losing, sets himself high standards.
  • Stewart Sharples: Again a great contributor.throughout the season in our star studded midfield
  • Willie Walker: (Texas Ranger) returned to the club this year and going great guns unfortunately got injured, see you next year Willie
  • Ross Hinkley: Mr Utility played wherever needed without question, which was a great attribute, played for the team cause.
  • James Howell: The red bull man played with enthusiasm and commitment, a good lad to have in your squad - infectious
  • Adam Clydesdale: An unsung hero in the eyes of the coach, did everything asked of him except score goals, seriously an important part of our team.
  • Andrew Christmas: Bulldog came in for Willie Walker and contributed greatly with his "hard at it attitude"
  • Frank Boonstra: The laid back captain of the squad who revelled in his midfield role, affectionately known as 'Wandering Boonstra'
  • Adrian Pereira (A.J.) Mr Relaxed, great for the hypo coach gave us a good balance, looked after the lads every whim.
  • Bernie Siggins : Magic Hands, managed to get Frank Boonstra's hammy right each week.

To all the other players who played for us from the under 23's Div One and the Premiers -thank you all. The winning of this premiership was a combined effort by the whole club and I thank everyone who contributed no matter how small.

In closing I would like to thank Greg Calvert who was supportive but let me run my own ship which was appreciated. To Vince Grimes & Charlie White thanks for your co-operation. To all the players enjoy the memories.

Mick T.
