Season's report
The year 2001 saw a long overdue change in focus of soccer in Tasmania with the
introduction of a "youth" focused league in the shape of the Premier Youth section
or Under 23 competition. With so many talented young players coming through
the ranks of KLUSC this team from the start was predicted to be a competitive
team. The squad for the summer cup was to be frank fairly disorganised and
lacking some of the more experience players that were found for the league season.
The year was a mixed affair some results outstanding and some were just lacklustre.
With a very young squad and a lack of a settled back formation a saviour was
found in the shape of Alex Wolfert, a 22 year old who had been playing in the
lower grades and struggling to get a regular game after the summer cup. His
introduction into the team gave stability, toughness and a fiercly competitive
individual who was consistenly in our top players week in week out. Our defensive
record was the fourth best in the league and strangely enough that is where
we finished. Stewie Betts in goals improved as the year went on and his final
two games were outstanding with his communication and shot-blocking skills coming
to the fore. With a mix of players, namely Cam Pereria, Gordy Kerr, Michael
Wolfert, Louis Aliphon and Alex the defense improved as the year wore on, the
only downfall was small lapses in concentration.
The midfield was unsettled for most of the year in trying to find the right
balance of ball-winners and ball-players to try and shut down the opposition.
The hard work of both Cam Coad and Michael Wolfert down the right and then
a plethora of players down the left meant that out wide we were defensively
alert. Lochlan Brown, Tony Damm, James O'Regan and John DeVries all worked
hard in the middle, with all having outstanding games at various times in the
middle.
The Forwards were our strength in many ways as Greg Freeman found his scoring
touch near the end to score 10 and James O'Regan had his touch early and scored
8. Rob Duff Silsby "the freak" was a constant threat and his imposing frame
and speed often cause other teams trouble. If only Rob could work out how to
turn on for some games, and actually get to others he would have been even more
potent. Rob was definately one of the big improvers when the season ended.
The goal that I set as a coach was to finish top 4 and we achieved that. The
next goal was to try and involve all eligible players who have shown potential
in the youth competition. Chris Tymbas was one such player, having received
clearance for the 15 year old to play Chris improved out of sight, scoring some
important goals and showing some real potential for the coming seasons, his
ability to follow instructions made him a great player to coach.
Probably my last goal was to try and feed players to the reserves and possible
seniors. At the last count 9 players had come off the bench or started for
the reserves which is testament in itself to the success of this team.
Thankyou all the players and I know that next year we will all improve together.
Thankyou Adam Powell for being there most of the time and running the line
some of the time, Luke Barlow for just being Luke and being there. Finally
thankyou to Penny Coad who washed the strip nearly every week, except when we
could get it away from her! We all love Penny! (especially on the muddy days)
cheers
