Season's report

Firstly, I would like to congratulate our team on a tremendous effort in season 2001. The boys who are all under 12 players, were graded to play in division two of the under 13 league this year. They proved to be very successful, finishing the season on top of the table.
We started the season on a high; everyone geared up and enthused, then only to receive dreadful news that our goalkeeper Chas Hughes, wouldn`t be able to play the rest of the season due to knee injury. As it turned out Chas made a rapid recovery and returned after about six weeks.
We had a few changes to our team from last year. The loss of Jake Perrett, Elliot Taylor, Sam Guc and Tom Reid made way for star players Brett Andrews, Jack Watchorn, Jeremy Brown and Jamon Pennicott. Before long you would have thought the team had been playing together for years.
Our line up, starting from the back in goals, Chas Hughes. Chas has definate natural talent as a keeper. Along with his miraculous saves and precise distribution he also showed superb player awareness and the ability to play as a second sweeper. James Correy, who played at sweeper, provided the team with great organization skills. In the last two years James has developed a real understanding of the game. Our other defenders included Sam Gales, Jacob Kink, Marcello Marchioli and Jack Watchorn. Sam played as a man lmarker and often found himself tagging the opposition's main striker. Sam did his job so well that his opponent would end up distracted from the game. Jacob had a terrific season in defence; he displayed great courage and persistence at the back. He also demonstrated a great attitude at training and in games. Marcello (Chell) could play anywhere on the park. He filled in as keeper whilst Chas was injured, he played midfield, and he was also a key defender. Chell is well known for his excellent ball skills and his ability to carry the ball out from the back. Jack is only a little fellow but he has a big heart. On the field he expressed enormous determination to win the ball. He played mainly in defence but now and then had a run in midfield. Jack also has potential as a future coach, he coached the boys for a game whilst he was out sick for a couple of weeks. Our midfield consisted of Brett Andrews, Mike Palmer, William Powell, Rui Hannington-Pinto, Chris Sanita and Jamon Pennicott. The team nominated Brett as our vice captain this season. He displayed tremendous skills playing in midfield, always involved in attacking plays, and outstanding at tracking players back when possession was lost. Mike provided brilliant passing from lmidfield allowing our forwards great opportunities to score goals. He alsoproved to be very strong in defence, demonstrating outstanding defensive awareness. If there were a most improved award this year William would have to get it, I don't think many would disagree. Will`s biggest improvement was his growth in confidence, backing himself to take players on. excellent year Will! Then there is Rui. Rui showed consistent enthusiasm throughout the year, at training and in games. His positive energy was the foundation of a never say die attitude that the team carried. Playing mainly at right mid and up front, the team's captain, Chris had a splendid season. He created great scoring opportunities for himself and other team mates with phenomenal ball skills. His great scoring ability led him to become the leading goal scorer for the division. Jamon generally played out on the left and occasionally up front. He created good space for himself allowing other players to constantly feed him with the ball. Jamon showed great skill when taking players on and the ability to score goals.
That leaves us with Damien Magill and Jeremy Brown (Brownie). These two played as forwards quite often but also played midfield roles as well. After gaining his confidence back Damien was unstoppable. He provided midfielders with a great target up front and showed great stability when playing in midfield. Brownie was a great asset to the team this year. He showed great vision and anticipation. He made tremendous efforts at goal but was unlucky on several occasions when the ball just wouldn`t go in the back of the net, (or was poached just before the line ).
I would like to thank the boys on a most enjoyable season and wish them all the best in their future endeavours. Thank you to all parents for their support and a special thanks to Bill Powell and Brad Hughes for their assistance with the team.
