Season's report
The future of Kingborough Lions women's soccer appears assured with the advent of the new under 14 girl's competition. Thanks to continual agitation by Karen Manuela and like-minded individuals within other clubs and Soccer Tasmania, the competition commenced, belatedly, on Sunday 22 July 2001.
To ensure the success of the team "word" was spread throughout the region about the new competition. No-one foresaw the result. Almost immediately 30 girls expressed interest with a large number attending training sessions. After some considerable trepidation, and discussions with Coach Adam Coleman, the only possible course of action was adopted, enter two teams. To maximise the playing experience for the girls, Roy Barker created an innovative rotational arrangement for the two teams, White and Blue. The system was to see the entire squad rotate between the White and Blue teams.
The season progressed particularly well for the squad who exerted their dominance over the other teams in the competition (Zebras, Mt Carmel, Clarence White and Clarence Green). The girls bonded very well although coming from five different schools. Despite plenty of giggling and theatrics, their focus and commitment on the park was unquestionable. This is evidenced by them occupying top position on the ladder at the date of this report (30 September) with five games to go. The likelihood of them being removed from this position is low.
Many of the girls had never played soccer before and the season has allowed them to develop. Positions are becoming settled and the team is being able to maximise its impact as the girls are becoming more comfortable. Importantly, 2001 has also enabled girls from the squad to represent the successful Southern Tasmanian team in the Federation Cup (Jessie Manuela, Leesa Collett, Danielle Bacon, Morgan Smith, Lucinda Holloway, Jessie Appleby, Jackie Appleby and Hanna Manuela) and the Mano Cup held in Launceston (Jessie Manuela, Leesa Collett, Morgan Smith, Lucinda Holloway, Jackie Appleby, Hanna Manuela and Danielle Raymond).
Finally the parents, Coach and Manager would like to thank all of the girls for a fantastic season. Our appreciation is also extended to the Club who permitted entry of two extra teams, mid season. A special thank you to Adam Coleman, Eleanor Harper, Karen Manuela, Roy Barker and several of the senior women players who have shown interest in the girls progress. 2002 promises to be very exciting.
