Season's report

This remarkable group of boys battled hard all year and were a credit to themselves for the way they handled themselves in victory, defeat and adversity. They played as a team all year with a very even skill and ability across the team. They were keen, eager to learn and an absolute pleasure to coach.

The goalkeeping duties were shared around the team with everyone having a turn but more often than not it was Brent Steenbergen or Tom McGrath who volunteered for goalkeeper.

Our "hard man" at the back, Sean Ash-Williams who never missed a tackle all year, led the defence and crunched the opposition. Sean also liked goalkeeper at times but was too valuable as a sweeper. His fullbacks were Brent Steenbergen and Tom McGrath (when they weren't in goal) and the three boys would have tackled a rhino if he came near the goals. Brent had an ability to read the play and position himself in the right place to make a good tackle whilst Tom is one of the best slide tacklers going around. There will be many sorry forwards from other teams in the years to come who ran up against our terrific trio.

The midfield was dominated by our relentless runners Jack Asprey, Brody Dingjan and Aiden Chinnery. These boys would never stop all game and all of them managed to score goals at crucial times. This tireless threesome hunted in a pack and never let the ball get far away from them. Jack has the longest kick of any Under 7 and is a very balanced runner, Brody has superb dribbling skills and refuses to give the ball up and Aiden has tremendous pace and tackles with either foot. These three pocket rockets will carve up the opposition in the years to come and form a formidable unit.

The forwards scored most of our goals this year and the dynamite duo of Tom Jacobs and Ben Cameron were a great pair. Ben had strength and size to muscle his way into good position and Tom had deft skills and guile to leave tacklers stranded behind him. These two have a taste for scoring that will see them score many goals for their team in years ahead.

These guys made coaching them so easy and enjoyable and I think the way they worked as a team all year will be a great indication of how well they will develop both as soccer players and as young men. The parents also deserve a special mention - all of the parents were always around to help out, they always supported the kids and embraced the season in the right spirit. Special thanks to Paul Cameron (known officially as Ben's Dad) who helped while Gerry and I were away.

Thanks guys.

Ron and Gerry Steenbergen
